Primary School
Young students start first grade at Berlin Metropolitan School at age 6.
Each grade of the Primary School is divided into 3 or 4 classes with a maximum of 22 students per class. Beginning in the first grade, classes are taught by a native English-speaking classroom teacher, who covers all subjects except German, art, music and sport. Each class also has a native-speaking teacher for German, who teaches German as well as part of the current class Unit of Inquiry.
We are very proud to be an authorized school of the International Baccalaureate Organisation, which has member schools in 125 countries. The Primary Years Programme is the basis for our curriculum in grades 1 – 5 and focuses on an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. Rather than divide our curriculum into standard course subjects, themes are taught in a transdisciplinary manner. This holistic approach inspires students to be curious and open-minded, both inside and outside of the classroom. As we are a state-recognized school, we also reflect the Berlin Framework Curriculum within our BMS curriculum.
